Morocco Seeks to Boost Energy Efficiency in Handicraft Sector

Rabat – Morocco seeks to boost energy efficiency in the handicraft sector, a joint statement from the Secretary of State for Handicrafts and the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency (AMEE) asserted yesterday.

Lahcen Essady, Secretary of State for Handicrafts and Director General of AMEE Mohamed Benyahia presided over the signing of an agreement on Tuesday, which aims to implement energy-saving projects within a comprehensive approach that integrates energy efficiency, resource optimization, and decarbonization.

The framework agreement focuses on reducing the consumption of firewood and gas in handicraft activities.

The partnership covers supporting artisans in optimizing their energy consumption, promoting efficient gas ovens, high-performance wood-fired ovens, and improved boilers, particularly for traditional hammams.

The partnership aims to deploy energy-efficient heating and cooking systems using firewood in rural and mountainous areas, as well as provide training and raise awareness about energy efficiency. It also includes mechanisms to develop a prototype for eco-energy-efficient rural construction and create energy labels for handicraft trade.

Specifically, the agreement has plans for designing two prototypes of gas ovens for pottery, ceramics artisans, and bakers. The two parties are committed to supporting and training artisans to construct these gas ovens and develop a national label that indicates the crafts were created using them.

Morocco has been investing heavily in its renewable energy strategy as part of its commitment to sustainability.

The North African country has pledged an ambitious goal of producing 52% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
